Stand near a corner of a room so that you can cue them to bring their hand with the ball in it back to tap the wall and then toss it. Maryland Physical Education Content Standards PK-12.Put the target on the ground, such as bowling pins, bean bag toss, ring toss, etc.Here are some techniques that have worked for us to teach the motion (these are in no order, pick and choose to see what works): Sometimes they actually end up using an underhand throw when the are trying to roll the ball! This is a similar motion and can also be challenging for the child. Often times you are going to see the side arm fling that you have no idea where it is going to end up! It’s a good way to practice your reflexes! I would also show them a one handed roll of a ball and see if they can do that. Start with showing the child an underhand throw and see how they do. And, we’d love to hear about techniques that have worked for you guys! I am going to share some of the techniques that have worked for us. So, I don’t have a tried and true way for teaching underhand throwing. ![]() ![]() Read the other two posts to get some more details! As they begin to master, decrease some aspect of the cueing and continue to progress until they barely need cueing at all and are fairly consistent! Also, doing the task slower is easier and faster is harder, closer is easier and further is harder. Just remember, break it into easier steps and give more support to begin with, and lots of repetitions. How you cue and how you change the cueing will also depend on the child you are working with. Now we are going to talk about underhand throwing. You can create your own if you were focusing on another cue.We recently talked about how to work on and practice overhand throwing with kids, and how to work on catching. Through Teaching Fundamental Motor Skills, elementary physical educators will guide their students in mastering the critical elements of 8 locomotor and 17. Have the kids come up with their own games for this too. The catcher could also turn around 360 degrees and when they stop that is when they toss the ball through hoop. The catcher could jog in place during the activity. To make it more fun and active, we had the catcher hula hooping, while waiting on the throw. This is probably best with the 2nd graders. The teacher will need to go around and help to make sure they are giving proper feedback. So you can tell them that today in class we are working on the underhand through and we are focusing on the follow through "fingers pointed to the target after ball leaves hand, waist height" so students can say that to their classmate. To make it even more meaningful have the catcher be the one who gives the feedback to their classmates. Throughout the activity make sure the teacher gives specific feedback about the the throwing cue you are working on like "Nice step with the opposite foot, Sally", "Way to follow through to the target, Robert". Once the catcher makes it to the other side of the floor, they will switch with the thrower. If unsuccessful, the thrower will try again. ![]() If successful, the catcher will scoot their poly spot back 2 steps. The thrower will perform the underhanded throw to try and get their ball into the hula hoop. The catcher will have the hula hoop around the waist. One student will be the thrower and the other will be the catcher. Spread the students out 15 feet from each other, and have them face each other. ![]()
